Wu De,a key participant in the events he recounts,describes the fall of the Gang of Four.Before his death,Mao Zedong had labeled Wang Hongwen,Zhang Chunqiao,Jiang Qing and Yao Wenyuan the`Gang of Four'and he warned against their ambitions to take over the Communist Party.This provided the basis for subsequently smashing the Gang of Four.After Mao's death,there were many signs that the Gang of Four were preparing to seize power,and Hua Guofeng,Mao's successor,was in a difficult quandary.The CCP Political Bureau exercised the will of the Party and the people,and after scrupulous planning and arrangements,it smoothly smashed the Gang of Four.
