The Knowledges of Fujian and Taiwan Coastal Defence Geography in the Early Qing Dynasty

A group of well-known scholars appeared in the early Qing Dynasty. They had carefully summarized the expriences and lessons from the struggle of anti-Wo Bandits (Japanese and native Chinese pirates)in the Ming Dynasty and made the proposal of strenghthening island defence, this thought is a great progress. They realized that Taiwan and Penghu islands acted as "protective screen" in protecting the mainland of China,and as hubs of international maritime communications. They sharply felt shocks from the West and watched vigilantly the invading activities of the Western colonists in Asia,and urged for strenghthening coastal defence. Their thoughts provided valuable theoretical foundation for the distribution and adjustation of coast defensive forces in the early Qing Dynasty.
