Giuseppe Castiglione and the Renaissance in Chinese Portraits of Emperors in the 18th Century
Abstract:
The author investigates the historical background to Chinese imperial portraits of the 18th centuryand emphasises the role played by Giuseppe Castiglione in his work at the court. The author reveals the reasonsfor the emergence of Giuseppe Castiglione's unique painting style and particularly the extent to which he drewon European miniature painting. At the same time the author discusses the endurance on this painting stylein court painting and its influence on 18th century literati portrait painting.
