Guangdong's Practice and Experience of Price Reform

Price reform was an important aspect of economic reform in Guangdong and across the country, and Guangdong's achievements in price reform set an example for the entire country. This paper examines the bases for Guangdong's success.It describes the competing proposals for price reform put forward in the early 1980s. It then analyses the four stages of price reform in Guangdong from 1979 to 1996, beginning with agricultural sidelines and expanding to industrial commodities and consumer goods. The paper highlights the role of Deng Xiaoping in supporting and guiding price reform in Guangdong.It ends by assessing the strategic options facing price reform there in order to align with international price mechanisms.
