The identification of blue - green dye on wool textiles from Shanpula tombs in Xinjiang

In 1983, a batch of dyed woolens were excavated at XinJiang Shanpula tombs, which dated about 1700 years ago. These dyed woolens are rich in color, such as blue, green, red, yellow etc. Although they are most earliest ones and have passed so long time, the colors remain bright. The ancient dyes on the wool have seldom been studied in China. This paper is the one of the series studies of dyes on woolens from Shanpula tombs. In order to determine the chemical compositions of blue dye, various analysis methods have been used synthetically including chemical analysis, TLC, IR, HPLC and MS, especially FAB - MS. FAB - MS is extremely sensitive for the identification of indigo and has many possible applications to the analysis o f organic dyes on tiny fragments of textiles of all ages. The blue dye has been successfully identified through contrast and verification. The blue dye is indigo from plant. The blue - green colors were re - dyed by blue dye on the yellow dyed woolens.
