On the Black Family in American Slavery

Family played a vital role in the life of the African - Americans suffering from slavery. Though the black slaves, who were regarded as the chattel of their masters, were not entitled to the right of family, they struggled to establish their family life despite various setbacks resulted from their bondage. The slaves adapted their way of fami- ly life to the peculiar institution and developed their unique values of family. It is in the family that the black people found the sense of community and individual identity, which contributed to their survival under slavery.
