Colours and colouring on Ancient Near Eastern statuettes from 3000 BC until the Achaemenids (330 BC)

In Ancient Mesopotamia all types of statues were painted from the beginning on. Colouring was achieved with various techniques and on very different materials. Colours were not always deemed to be necessary, but they were added to adorn the statue, and also to make its appearance more realistic and therefore lively. This was very important considering that gods, private donors and animals were thought to be living in their statues.
