The Localization of Museums Established by Westerners in China:A Case Study of the Heude Museum and Shanghai Museum

Being a manifestation of Western cultural colonization in China,the museums established by Westerners in China,represented by the Heude Museum and the Shanghai Museum,were also institutions that collected natural history information in China.Their main function was to collect natural history specimens and carry out researches to serve the western countries'needs for natural history research and understanding China.In the 1920s and 1930s,they began to emphasize the role of the museums as public cultural institutions.As a result,exhibitions and education became important activities of these museums,and the museums opened their doors to the Chinese public.This shift was not only driven by the development of these museums themselves,but also influenced by the changing ideas towards museums both in China and west.It also meets the needs of the local cultural development.The shift reflects the transformation of these museums from serving the Western needs to serving the Chinese society.
