Some general principles for the design of urbanized areas are proposed with a view to satisfying the needs of residents, insuring the normal operation of cities and optimizing interaction with the natural environment. The optimal design takes the general form of a letter Y and seeks to separate industrial and residential zones by a protective greenbelt.
