Li Xiannian and the Construction of Baoshan Steelworks

Li Xiannian was one of the major decision-makers and leaders in the construction of Baoshan Steelworks. He paid a great deal of attention to this project, including the preliminary deliberations, reconnoiter of the site, planning, negotiations with foreign countries, technological introduction, the starting of construction, quality of the project and scientific management. He made a series of instructions and personally inspected the projects three times. Convinced that this project would meet the urgent needs of China's modernization drive, he insisted on "advancing bravely" and "carrying the project through to the end" in spite of objections and difficulties, thus making valuable contributions to the launching and completion of the project. Historical facts have proved that the decision of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council on the construction of Baoshan Steelworks was correct and their guidance, in which Li Xiannian played a vital part, was timely, powerful and effective.
