A Preliminary Study on the East-West Traffic Routes in Parthian Empire at the Beginning of the Opening of the Silk Road

The specific route of the Silk Road is the focus of academic circles in the field of sino-foreign exchanges for a long time.When Zhang Qian came into Central Asia,Parthian Empire,which controlled the key routes from Mesopotamia to Central Asia,was expanding its territory.From the west to the east,the territory of Parthian Empire could be divided into three regions:Assyria-Babylonia district,Persian hinterland on the Iranian Plateau and the instable border area east of Hyrcania.Analyzing Chinese and foreign data and archaeological achievements,it can be found that routes of east-west traffic in Parthian Empire remained stable on the whole from Alexander the Great’s Anabasis to the 1st and 2nd century when the four empires were existing at the same time in Eurasia.After the opening of the Silk Road,most routes became important parts of the Silk Road trade network,but part of the routes was changed due to various factors,such as geographical conditions and political situation.
