The identification of chronic ear disease in the dried skull

Ear disease, and in particular chronic ear infection, has received scant attention in the palaeopathological literature. This paper describes the chronic infection known as cholesteatoma and how it may be identified in the archaeological specimen. A survey is made of the incidence of the condition in a series of pre-dynastic Egyptian skulls.
