Painting materials of polychrome funeral objects from ancient Egypt

A number of eight ancient Egyptian funeral objects have been investigated. These objects were parts of the traditional burial rites and include mummy wrappings (cartonnage coffins), portrait masks, wooden coffins, and ritual furniture. They come from later periods of ancient Egyptian history (around 800 BC until g00AD) and show polychrome decorations of various styles and techniques. The paper presents analytical results of pigments, fillers, and binding media. The results are discussed with respect to dating, conservation, and archaeology. While the pigments from the dynastic period (before 310 BC) are restricted to the "basic Egyptian palette", the later objects show an expanded set of pigments.
