A Rational Inspection on J. K. Fairbank's Ideas on Chinese History

China studies in America begins with John King Fairbank. who from his own special angle of view observed and examined China for more than half a century. In the 1950s he advanced his "impact-response"model as an instrument to interpret the conflict between Chinese and Western civilizations. For many years there has been an argument over his model and historians pass different judgements on his historical ideas. This article aims to examine rationally his ideas on Chinese history and the context as well as the nature of his"impact-response"model with the purpose of a better understanding of our hislory.
