施坚雅、帕金斯等人倡导的明清时期城市化历史中“经济──地理”的人类学理论模式，不一定适用于每一个微观个案研究。清代山西贩粮路线的演变历史对此提出反例。对山西粮食运销的考察结果表明，区域性市场需求的扩大是刺激粮食长途贩运的重要原因，粮食的运销也支持了相关区域的城市化发展。清代晋中南地区的城市化进程同口外蒙古的垦殖活动有一定的互动关系。
