Abstract:Infrasound of 5 s period generated by ocean waves has been recorded for the past ten years at Palisades, N.Y. Infrasound from the east is reflected in the lower thermosphere during the months of September through April and provides a continuous record of the height of reflection, and thus the level of strong east winds, between 100 and 120 km throughout the day. By recording the trace velocity across a ground level array of sensors we also determine the sound velocity at the reflection height. Results of the ten year climatology of strong east wind occurrence in the lower thermosphere for each hour for each of the nine months are presented, as well as a detailed discussion of recurring effects, meridional winds, tidal effects and the influence of stratospheric warmings.
