Abstract: | Abstract In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Sir George Foster was one of the most ardent Canadian proponents of imperial economic organization. For years he and other Canadian and British imperialists tried to persuade the British government to abandon its traditional freetrade policies in order to extend tariff preferences to the Empire. But their efforts were futile, and by 1911 only Foster and a few other dedicated imperialists were still actively pursuing the issue. |
