Historical Exploration and Development of the Meizhou Mountain Areas:A Toponymy Perspective

Place names are names given to geographical entities,administrative regions,or spots in social activities.Place names tend to bear strong continuity and stability,and therefore can preserve the cultural connotations of the time when the names were given in a more complete manner.This article takes on Meizhou rural places names in the northeastern mountain region of Guangdong as its interpretative objects,explores and discusses the relations between place names and the ecological environment and development of the mountain regions,between place names and ethnic groups,between place names and historical figures and historical events,between place names and military facilities and economic activities,in the hope to restore the rich humanistic elements contained by names of Hakka habitations.
