袁世凯对日外交述论

褒世凯一生以日本为主要外交对手，对日外交的成败也与其在政坛上的兴衰沉浮息息相关。驻朝时代，褒世凯与日本全面对抗；回国后至辛亥革命前。以日为师，并采取联英美以制日俄的对策；辛亥革命时期，面对日本的步步侵略，一面抵制，一面妥协。最后以外交及个人政治生涯完全失败而告终。

A Discussion on Yuan Shikai's Diplomatic Policy toward Japan

Yuan Shikai regarded Japan as his main diplomatic opponent in his lifetime, and the success or failure of his foreign policy toward Japan are closely related to his political rise or decline. Yuan Shikai opposed Japan roundly when he was stationed in Korea. After he came back China, he advocated learning from Japan and adopted the tactic of associating with Britain and the United States to contend with Japan and Russia. During the Revolution of 1911, in the face of Japanese aggression step by step, Yuan Shikai resisted Japan on the one hand and made compromises with Japan on the other hand. Eventually, both the diplomacy and the personal political career of Yuan Shikai came to an end with a complete failure.
