The Ethnic Chinese and the Siam's Foreign Trade from the 17th Century to the Middle of the 19th Century

The paper describes the activities of ethnic Chinese in Siam's foreign trade, inquires into their roles in Siam's foreign trade in different stages from the 17th century to the middle of the 19th century. It concludes that by making use of their advantages, ethnic Chinese in Siam gradually became the main participant and operator in Siam's foreign trade. Through the foreign trade, they developed their own business, accumulated wealth, and they satisfied the need of the Siamese Kings and Royalty to carrying foreign trade, obtained special privileges from the Siamese Kings, and laid a solid foundation for the development of their own business at the same time.
