A Summary of 1990s Chinese Research on the `Sent-Down Youth'

In the late 1980s,as the limitations of the genre of `sent\|down youth literature'as a way of reflecting this major historical experience became clear,Chinese scholars began striving for a more scientific,sober\|minded and searching analysis of the campaign to send urban school graduates down to the countryside.Beginning with Zhang Hua's 1987 essay of the `sent\|down youth' campaign during the Cultural Revolution,over the past ten years or more Chinese scholars have amassed certain research findings that reflect an arduous search for truth.Scholars have examined the campaign from different perspectives and in different stages.As research has deepened,it has been able to transcend sentimentality and soberly examine this campaign.As well,in recent years a series of creative theoretical explorations of the campaign have appeared.
