王氏父子的训诂思想和方法

The Exegetical Thought and Methods of the Wang Father and his Son

Among those who were noted for the exegetics of the ancient Chinese texts in the Qing Dynasty, Wang Niansun and his son Wang yinzhi were most outstanding. Their approaches to the exegetical studies are as follows: not to stick immutably to the scholars' theories in the Han Dynasty, but to seek truth from facts; to search for the word meaning not from the restriction on the form of written character, but from it's pronunciation; to analyze the word meaning dialectically; to advocate not to interpret the function word with the content word; to attach importance to summing up the laws of interpreting the word meaning. And all these above are worthy to be made use of.
