Abstract:Inspired by the civil rights movement,Chinese American neo-leftist societies spread from university campuses to Chinatowns between the 1960s and 1970s.At a grassroots level, they advocated“serve the people”and moblized ordinary Chinese Americans to challenge injustice and the unequal social order of the country. To some extent, they achieved gains for dropout youths, unemployed workers and financially constrained tenants. However, most Chinese Americans disapproved their unrealistic ideology of overthrowing the American government through revolutionary actions.Despite this,Chinese American neo-leftists deserve to be remembered for their efforts to enlighten and lead the public, and to make a conservative Chinese American society become awakened and revitalized.
