Ayodeji Olukoju and His Research on Maritime History

Avodeji Olukoju is one of the major figures in the third wave of historical scholarship in Nigeria.He is also one of the pioneers of Nigerian maritime history.According to him,man time history studies all human activities associated with the sea In his research,he works on topics such as Nigerian ports,shipping industry,and comparison of maritime history.Olukoju believes in the relevance of historical studies to social development,and he adopts long-tenn perspectives to examine policy decisions.For example,by comparing Nigerian and Japanese maritime policies and economic developments,he advocates maritime nationalism.He argues that Nigeiian government should strengthen the slate power to facilitate man time development.As to study the development of ports,he prefers multiple causations to a single explanation.In his research,Olukoju adopts concepts from a diverse group of geographers and economists,and employs an interdisciplinaiy method.
