A Tentative Investigation of American Policy to Aid Taiwan in the Period from 1949 to 1953

The period from 1949 to 1953 was the starting point of American-Taiwan relations after the beginning of the Cold War. During these years, the US government pursued a quite stable policy in aiding Taiwan. Although some "ambiguous" tactics were adopted there was no clear-cut turn in American policy from "giving up" to "propping up," to say nothing of concrete actions of abandoning Taiwan. Before the Republican Party came into power in 1953, the maximum limit of American policy on Taiwan was to try to use it as a "strategic reserve force" to serve the American Cold War in the Far East.
