The Rise of Modern Chinese Nationalism and the 1905 Boycott Against American Goods

This boycott was a manifestation of an approach and ideas totally different from traditional xenophobia. It gave expression to the rise of the ideology of popular sovereignty and of the state of the entire nation, operations of social associations and the mass media of a new style, growth of conscious participation in politics on the part of the masses, emergence of a modern social public opinion, and a civil and rational approach to foreign affairs. It was thus one of the earliest movements in the modern history of China mobilized by modern nationalism against the Western powers.
