Abstract

Burrstones from France are universally, often uncritically, referred to as 'the best' millstones. In this article the author assembles something of the history of the most widely known of all stones, and probably the most widely distributed – those from La Ferté-sous-Jouarre. But not all French stones were burrstones, nor were they always of the same high quality.
