Light for Art Conservation

Abstract

High-intensity light from lasers is used for the surface treatment of works of art to bring about a cleaning or divestment, stabilization, sterilization, and renewed activation. The use of conservation techniques of laser divestment for textiles, leather, paper, pottery, bronze, glass and concrete have all been achieved and some are here described in detail. The author believes that through this type of work, science is repaying a debt to art, saving works of art from deterioration and ultimate destruction.
