The Manufacture of Millstones in the Eifel Region of Germany

Abstract

The Eifel massif in West Germany has provided building stone from pre-Roman times to the present day and has been the source of highly-valued millstones throughout the whole of this period. The purpose of this paper is to deal with the production of millstones in this region in particular and to analyse the various forms of millstones and the methods used in their extraction.
