In a recent debate in this Journal, Daunton and Whitehand engaged forces on the issue of building cycles and the urban fringe in Victorian cities.^1] While eschewing detailed involvement in their discussion, certain points emerged which in the context of new evidence on the Scottish building cycle it may be useful to consider further.
