Nest–site Selection and Breeding Success of Wedge–tailed Shearwaters Puffinus pacificus at Heron Island
Authors:Jenny Carter
Abstract:The nest-site selection and the reproductive success of the Wedge-tailed Shearwater (Puffinus pacificus) were examined at Heron Island. Thirteen habitat variables were measured and grouped statistically into four composite variables, which were related to nest-site selection and breeding success in two structural equation models. Both models showed that substrate moisture was negatively related to nest-site selection, although one model revealed an additional positive effect of soil strength. Hatching success was associated with high substrate moisture and with low density of nesting birds. Burrows are probably sited where excavation is easiest and eggs laid where collapse is least likely. Some small-scale competition for nest–sites may occur.
