The aim of this paper is to suggest an analytical framework through which the complex question of hospital closure and local protest can be further explored. The significance of this area of study lies with the extraordinary events that surrounded a campaign to save the Kidderminster General Hospital from downsizing. Whilst the hospital was not saved, the local campaign committee organizing the protest took their fight into the political arena and were successful in gaining a parliamentary voice in the 2001 general elections. Such an achievement has had considerable political implications, however, the question asked here is how might we begin to interpret the events that took place. To this end, the paper draws on current geographical literature in an attempt to construct a framework that accounts for both national policy debates and the local context within which such campaigns emerge. 相似文献

In contrast to most other countries, public opinion in Canada is relatively positive towards immigration and immigrants. Yet the economic fortunes of immigrants, especially those who have arrived recently, have been falling over the past three decades. Four analytical perspectives on the relatively poor economic performance of immigrants in Canada are discussed, and are used to build a composite understanding of this economic outcome. I argue that the weak economic position of immigrants – particularly the fact that they do not compete against the Canadian‐born in privileged segments of the labour market – is an important ingredient in the favourable public view of immigration. 相似文献

Although industrial restructuring in a resource region might appear at first glance to impact mainly on the predominantly male labour force, in practice it often results in a broader range of economic and social changes as women expand and intensify their entrepreneurial activities as home‐based paid workers, and as shifts occur in gender divisions of waged and unwaged labour. The Corner Brook region represents an example of these transformative processes of change. Since restructuring in resource regions occurs in situ, it is necessarily contingent on local place‐based geographies and histories, but its impact has profound implications for gender identity and social relations in economically marginalised regions. 相似文献

This paper focuses on the strategies for production and work reorganization pursued in the Canadian newsprint industry during the 1990s. Many newsprint mill managers view new pulping technologies and increased labour process flexibility as the important keys to success in their never-ending quest to remain competitive in the U.S. market. These strategies are discussed in the context of two underlying themes: the nature of the particular competitive pressures faced by Canadian newsprint producers in the early 1990s and the specific nature of the labour process in newsprint mills. Evidence points to the central importance of achieving functional labour flexibility in newsprint mills and to the fact that numerical labour flexibility is not a viable strategy, given the continuous-process nature of the industry.

Kruger Incorporated purchased the aging pulp and paper mill in Corner Brook in 1984, armed with a federal-provincial modernization agreement and a pattern-breaking contract with the mill unions. It is argued that changes made in the decade since then correspond most closely with a form of lean production. Six elements of lean production are found at Corner Brook: tighter coordination of production and automation; a continued concentration on core activities; the farming out of ancillary activities; shrinking and segmentation of the workforce; environmental compliance, increasing technical efficiency; and the co-opting of the workforce into the mission of the firm. 相似文献

This contribution considers the spatial distribution of foreigners in Brussels. Fifteen nationalities are considered, among which a group of affluent foreigners linked to the international functions of the city (EU Capital and NATO headquarters) and a poor group whose beginnings can be traced to the ‘guestworkers’ immigration in the late sixties and early seventies. Firstly, the population structure of Brussels and the position of its foreigners are outlined in a historical perspective. Then, the housing market structure and its spatial distribution are explained. Both elements are crucial to the understanding of the contrasting residential distribution of the affluent foreigners and the guestworkers. Finally, the changes in the composition of the foreign communities between 1981 and 1991 are examined and related to processes of urban restructuring. They express the passage from a Fordist to a post-Fordist city whereby spatial patterns merely change, but deepening contrasts in the social structure appear. 相似文献

This paper consists of two sections. The first provides a general outline of transformation processes in retailing on the national scale in the years 1988–98. Special attention is paid to the factors of retail development and stores privatisation, foreign entrepreneurship in retailing, stores fragmentation and changes in assortment. The second section comprises the empirical case study of a small town in which the changes in retailing and services observed can be studied on the micro‐scale. The changes include an increase in the number of facilities, privatisation processes, changes in assortments, emergence of new crafts in services, changes in location and early stages of capital concentration. 相似文献

Scottish carrier trade declined rapidly in the period 1820–60, but the pattern is complex and growth co‐exists with contraction. Total volume of traffic is halved, but in areas peripheral to the thin rail net there are increases.
