The redevelopment of former industrial sites now constitutes a significant component of the landscape of Atlantic Canada. This paper explores the heritage issues surrounding two industrial sites in Sackville, New Brunswick, and argues that the heritage discourse is constructed through the creation of memory and the processes of commodification and consumption. Using the examples of two foundries, the paper investigates the manner in which the image of industry has been presented and reinterpreted, both through the industrial heydays of the late‐19th and mid‐20th centuries and in the contemporary scene. The commemoration, commodification and consumption of selected aspects of the industrial past are significant means by which Sackville creates its place identity. The resulting landscapes remain problematic, however, with a tendency to be overly romanticised and sanitised or at odds with contemporary images of Sackville's place identity.

Recent scholarship addressing efforts to celebrate heritage in low-income neighbourhoods and housing estates has stressed the importance of attending to the continuity of place-based social relationships as a key factor in residents’ understandings of heritage, and, drawing on Smith’s conception of an ‘authorised heritage discourse’, the ways these understandings differ from hegemonic and generalised expert discourse emphasising the deficiencies of the material environment. In this article, I examine a new object of state intervention in France, ‘the heritage of popular neighbourhoods’, and describe points of convergence and conflict between local heritage work in Marseille and the recent discursive framework established to employ heritage as a tool in reorganising French state policy towards urban peripheral neighbourhoods (the politique de la ville). Drawing on ethnographic research (2007–2014), this article identifies emplacement as a key feature in residents’ performances of neighbourhood heritage, a feature often absent or poorly elaborated in heritage work promoted by French urbanist policy in the past. I describe the ways emplacement has been expressed aesthetically in arts projects, trace the range of social networks and relationships enacted, and describe the political implications of these performances as a tool for promoting solidarity across time and space in Marseille.

This paper presents a case study of an Aboriginal heritage assessment conducted with the Esperance Nyungars in southern Western Australia. The study incorporates contemporary social significance with archaeological assessment to form a holistic cultural significance statement for the landscapes surrounding the Munglinup River. The results are analysed with reference to the currently proposed legislative reform of the Western Australian Aboriginal Heritage Act. The analysis has relevance for archaeological assessment methodologies, cultural heritage management, legislation reform and administration of the current and future Western Australian Aboriginal Heritage Act. This case study demonstrates the value of incorporating social significance into archaeological assessments, including custodial responsibilities, cultural landscapes and the links between ecology and cultural heritage.

For the Bulwandji Traditional Owners of Cape York Peninsula, Bunda Bibanji (also known as “Bare Hill”) is part of bulurru – the Storytime, or the time of creation (Bottoms 1999: 1). Bunda Bibanji is the place where the culture hero, Kunandooran, turned into rock after his death by fire; it forms part of a complex cultural landscape. Bunda Bibanji also contains the largest rock art complex in the Cairns hinterland and has significant research potential for both rock art studies and understanding the occupation history of the region. Until recently, management of the site complex has focused on visitor management and its tangible scientific values, rather than its social and intangible cultural values. However, a major shift in management in recent years has aimed to enhance the Aboriginal social values of the place, potentially placing its scientific values at risk. This paper explores the tensions between managing scientific and cultural values at the Bunda Bibanji complex from both archaeological and Traditional Owner perspectives.

Contestation of culturally significant places is a phenomenon that is regularly encountered in heritage management. Takky Wooroo (Indian Head), on World Heritage–inscribed K’gari (Fraser Island), is no exception. The research presented in this paper uses a multi‐vocal methodology situated within the constructivist paradigm of “Indigenous archaeologies” to evaluate contested evidence for cultural and historical significance at Takky Wooroo. Much of the contestation relates to whether or not Takky Wooroo was the site of a massacre in the nineteenth century and if so, how this impacts on the management of the place. Evidence for the massacre is investigated using oral history from Traditional Owners as well as archival sources. Perceptions of the headland held by Traditional Owners, tourists and other stakeholders are assessed as the basis for a review of management strategies for this contested place. Themes of memorialisation and association are explored and, in the absence of tangible “scientific” evidence to link Takky Wooroo with its past uses, the inclusion of intangible understandings, such as Indigenous Knowledge, are shown to be paramount in assigning significance. In particular, we argue that memorialisation, association and the archaeology of absence allow the historically documented massacre event to be linked with Takky Wooroo in a manner that is not possible through material culture assessment alone.

This article investigates the production and maintenance of the heritage landscape in downtown Halifax, Nova Scotia. It argues that the unequal power relations that produced and were inscribed in the landscape historically continue to operate in the present. It does so by critically evaluating and contextualizing contestation over new high‐rise construction on the streets below Citadel Hill. Drawing on qualitative field work between 2005 and 2008, the article suggests that the meanings and values of heritage resources, such as views that served to protect the city, are not properly understood. A spatialized historical account shows how the creation of the colonial city depended upon the marginalization of groups that were other to the British settlers. A review of the establishment of the modern planning apparatus reveals a model of heritage interpretation that encourages an adversarial approach to the evaluation of proposals for new development. The characteristics and aspirations of pro‐development and pro‐heritage groups are examined. Finally, a case study of a controversial proposal to build a high‐rise building in a prominent location is presented. The article contributes to critical landscape studies by using a postcolonial approach to study the ideological underpinnings of built heritage in the Canadian context.
