Beautiful Geography: The Pictorial Maps of Ruth Taylor White

This paper explores the career of Ruth Taylor White, an American cartographic illustrator who published a significant number of pictorial maps from the 1920s into the 1940s. Taylor White’s ‘cartographs’ (as she called them) were characterized by her signature bobble-headed cartoon characters who romped through colourful, attractive landscapes. These visually rich and highly narrative maps simultaneously strove for accuracy and engaged in profound stereotyping with regard to culture, race, gender and class. They reveal not only the aesthetic and conceptual preferences of their maker but also the cultural biases of their middle-class, white American audience.     

关于辽墓"出行图"的考证

本文对近年发现的辽墓"出行图"壁画进行了分析.以为可分为两类,分别代表了辽国诸王和贵族以及汉官贵族的出行.这两类形制不仅在分布地域上有别,而且表现形式也各有千秋.     

西藏阿里札达县洛当寺新发现的10-18世纪经书残卷插图的调查与初步研究

本文对洛当寺经书的内容、字体、书写、绘画风格、题材和题记等进行了首次调查和初步研究。研究显示,这批经书残卷及其插图由写本和刻本组成,写本最多,时代较早,主要为《般若波罗蜜多经》等经典;刻本较少,年代较晚。经书和插图制作于10-18世纪之间,基本反映出阿里古格王朝写经、刻经及其插图创作的历史脉络,是迄今国内发现藏传插图数量最多、时代跨度最大的写经和刻经作品。经书的发现对于弥补国内藏传写经彩绘插图,进一步研究阿里、西藏自治区乃至中国古代写经、刻经和译经的历史,以及插图艺术的题材、风格及其特点、演变,都具有重要的学术和艺术价值。     

明代书籍插图与人物肖像画关系研究

明代是中国封建社会城市经济和商品经济得到较大发展的历史时期。市民阶层的形成,促进了以戏曲、小说为代表的通俗文学的发展,戏曲、小说中的插图在继承宋元传统的基础上得到了前所未有的繁荣。明代的人物肖像画家面对人物画的弱势格局和蓬勃兴起的书籍出版业,积极为书籍创作插图,两者之间形成了紧密联系、共同发展的关系。     

Pencils and Pixels: Drawing and Digital Media in Archaeological Field Recording

Within the context of a growing emphasis on digital recording, what is the place of analog drawing in archaeological fieldwork? In this article, we situate the increased application of digital drawing methods by providing several historical examples of archaeological field drawing in British archaeology to demonstrate the connection between understanding the archaeological record and illustration. Given this background of analog archaeological recording, we then explore the current state of archaeological field drawing and the affordances of digital illustration for recording and interpreting the archaeological record, review literature in architecture and design regarding the cognitive function of analog and digital drawing, and discuss the possible future implications of born-digital or paperless archaeology.

‘Cleverly Drawn’: Oscar Wilde,Charles Ricketts,and the Art of the Woman's World

This paper offers a new examination of the influential women's magazine, theWoman's World (1887–90), and Oscar Wilde's editorship thereof. Previous studies have focused on the magazine's importance as a venue for promoting proto-feminist writing and for enabling Wilde to boost his professional cachet through editorial work, but the aesthetic aims and execution of theWoman's World merit further analysis. The Woman's World reveals how male artists negotiated aesthetics and Aestheticism between themselves within its pages, as well as how they presented it to the publication's assumed audience of women. This paper particularly centres on the magazine's role in establishing the professional relationship between Wilde and Charles Ricketts, later the designer and illustrator of some of Wilde's most important texts, while simultaneously considering how Ricketts's work furthered the artistic and intellectual instruction Wilde hoped to offer the magazine's readers. Case studies of several of Ricketts's illustrations demonstrate the types of visual reading that the Woman's World seemed to espouse, and which worked in tandem with the textual contents to encourage women to develop critical reading skills.
