Improvised Hybridity in the “Fixing” of Chinese Infrastructure Capital: The Case of Kenya's Standard Gauge Railway

The article explores the role of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) in the globalisation of China's infrastructure capital. Examining how accumulation strategies of Chinese SOEs are driven by a complex set of political and economic, state and private, interests, it foregrounds the inherently hybrid nature of China's state capitalism. We use Kenya's Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) as a case study to analyse how state infrastructure capital traverses borders, and the specific ways that contradictions of accumulation in China are relocated through the improvised hybridity of SOEs. In Kenya, China Road and Bridge Corporation, the main SGR contractor, shifted and adapted its strategies as the pursuit of economic productivity gave way to political priorities in China, simultaneously responding to changing socio-political circumstances in Kenya and across East Africa. Analysing these dynamics, we highlight the contingencies of, and limitations to, structural reorganisation of actually existing forms of state capitalism in China and beyond.

湿洗是纺织品文物保护修复中的重要操作之一.湿洗操作是不可逆的,不恰当的选用湿洗或选用不恰当的湿洗方法会给文物造成不可弥补的损失.因此,很有必要制定纺织文物湿洗操作的应用规范.本文认为理解湿洗的利与弊是总结其应用规范的前提,其规范应大体包括湿洗必要性和可行性评估、湿洗方案制定和湿洗操作实施三部分.     

Screw Threads on the SS Xantho Engine: a Case of Standardisation in 19th Century Britain

A former RN gunboat horizontal trunk engine taken from the SS Xantho (1848–1872) in 1985 was totally disassembled by May 2004. All the threads on the engine were examined and the majority were found to be British Standard Whitworth (BSW). This provides material evidence of the spread of standardisation at a time when the Royal Navy commissioned the first mass-produced marine engines and fitted them to the 'Crimean War Gunboat' types. The study also provides a pointer to the use of screw threads as a diagnostic tool in maritime archaeology.

Development and Verification of a New Site Classification System and Site Coefficients for Regions of Shallow Bedrock in Korea

In this article, site response analyses for 124 sites collected in Korea were performed to evaluate earthquake ground motions in regions of shallow bedrock in Korea. Based on the results, a new two-parameter site classification system was developed for use in regions of shallow bedrock. The system incorporates depth to bedrock and mean V_S of soil above bedrock as parameters for site classification instead of V_S30. Soil sites were divided into seven site classes and the corresponding site coefficients were proposed for each site category. Some verification work demonstrates the superiority of the proposed system over the current seismic codes.     

Best practices for measuring community resources across Canada: A comparison of coding classifications

Social scientists, geographers, criminologists, and health scientists are often tasked with finding data to best capture the impact of “community context” on individual outcomes, including residential services, physical resources, and social institutions. One outlet for such data in Canada is Digital Map Technologies Inc. (DMTI) Spatial, which offers a national repository of over one million businesses and recreational points of interest. The database is generated through CanMap Streetfiles, which includes geocodes of each point's precise location. These data are available to researchers from their university data library and Esri Canada, but primarily available to private sector and government markets. That said, the goal of the current paper is to encourage researchers to access this rich yet under-utilized data source. Each service, business, or resource in the DMTI Spatial database is assigned to a respective category using Standard Industrial Classification codes and North American Industrial Classification System codes. It is not clear, however, which is the more reliable coding criteria. We provide an overview of our review of DMTI Spatial data and take-away suggestions for using this valuable resource for future research on meso-level residential markers.

社区尺度认知地图扭曲的空间分析——基于首师大和北林大的个案研究

以首都师范大学和北京林业大学为例,利用标准方差椭圆方法讨论社区尺度上认知地图的扭曲分析,有四点结论:①社区尺度上的认知地图均为原始地图的缩小认知。但主导缩小方向与社区内部的主要道路网结构密切相关。②社区主干道和社区边界对认知地图的方向扭曲施加重要影响,发挥着定位基准线的作用。③社区尺度上各认知地点标准方差椭圆的长轴方向与空间定位基准线方向基本一致。④反映空间认知被试者差异性的各地点认知的标准方差椭圆面积与被试者对地点的熟悉程度有负向关系。     

从经注与史注的变奏看裴松之《三国志注》的学术史地位

在中国学术发展史上,史学是作为经学附庸的地位出现的,这时史注附属于经注;伴随着史学从经学的附庸地位摆脱出来,成为一门独立学科,史注也逐渐打破此前经注研究范式,探索适合史学这门学科本身特点的研究范式;裴注正是对这些探索成果的吸收和总结,并继承了经注研究范式的优长之处;裴注对后世的史注形式产生了深远的影响,并在近代获得了新生,它的出现标志着史注研究范式的确立;这种新的研究范式,反过来又影响了其所脱胎的经注研究范式。仔细研究二者关系的变化,就会发现其与学术史上经史关系的变化有着某种规律性的联系。     

2000年中国的美国问题研究定量分析

通过对2000年中国的4594篇美国问题文章的定量分析,可以发现该年度中国的美国问题研究有七个方面的特点：全方位研究态势进一步发展;经济、政治、文化为三大研究热点;军事研究凸现;教育研究引人注目,历史和社会研究相对薄弱;普及文章独占鳌头,学术文章和译文比例减小：中美关系占有重要地位,借鉴性文章也大幅度增加;某些课题研究亟待充实。但同时也存在着若干明显的不足。今后中国的美国问题研究,应重视普及工作,坚持实事求是的思想路线,重视跟踪考察和理论创新,全方位、多侧面地关注美国问题,加强学术评论,完善学术规范,加快信息库建设,从而提高中国的美国问题研究的学术水平。
