Mountain recreation in the East Grampians

Extracts from the results of a year‐long study of mountain recreation in the East Grampians are briefly summarised. Visitor profiles and activity patterns are sketched, and attitudes explored. High levels of satisfaction and enjoyment were reported, but the numbers of persons present gave rise to a sense of loss of wildness on the part of a substantial minority of mountain users.     

A park of the people: the demotion of Platt National Park,Oklahoma

Platt National Park, Oklahoma, was the smallest national park in the United States until it was combined with an adjacent, reservoir-centered recreation site in 1976 to form Chickasaw National Recreation Area. Set aside as Sulphur Springs Reservation by agreement with the Chickasaw Indians in 1902 and designated a national park in 1906, Platt is the only American national park to be demoted since World War II. The story of Platt's creation and demotion reflects the changing mission of the National Park Service (NPS), shifting images of nature and recreation among the American public, and broader social forces that frame park purposes. What started as local boosterism of hydrotherapy in cold mineral springs grew into one of America's most visited national parks by the 1920s. Despite its popularity, Platt lacked both scenic grandeur and political influence; it did not fit prevailing images of wild nature among NPS bureaucrats and the urban elite who formed the core of the environmental movement; it was too small, too humanized, and too ordinary. As images of people embedded in nature have gained wider acceptance in recent decades, would this small, geographically distinctive, and culturally rich “park of the people” have met a similar fate today?     

Modeling tides and tsunami propagation in the former Gulf of Tartessos,as a tool for Archaeological Science

After the last Holocene sea level rise (about 6900 BP), the Gulf of Tartessos extended over the south-western area of the nowadays Guadalquivir Valley (Spain). With the development of some depositional littoral landforms and the progressive infill, the system evolved towards an inland lagoon. The first political system in the area emerged and collapsed from the fourth to the second millennium BC. Around the first millennium BC the culture of Tartessos flourished in this area under the Phoenician influence, but it vanished by the sixth century BC. The quest of its lost capital, the city of Tartessos, has been one of the most exciting archaeological enterprises in the past century. The former coastline and the bathymetry of the gulf can be reasonably reconstructed from geo-archaeological studies, and it can be used for the numerical modeling of tide and tsunami propagation in this water body. Models, with a spatial resolution of 30 s of arc, are based on the 2D non-linear hydrodynamic equations and have been previously validated under nowadays conditions. Computed tidal elevations and currents can provide some insight on the ancient trades for ship traffic and fisheries. The simulation of tsunami propagation, like the catastrophic one of 1755, allows estimating their potential hazardous effects on ancient coastal cities.     

农村居民闲暇生活特征研究——以湖南省为例

2001年4月至8月抽取湖南省浏阳市、华容县、新宁县、凤凰县和资兴市等五个代表样地的农村居民共1300人(户),对农村居民的闲暇生活和旅游活动进行了详细调查。结果表明,湖南省农村居民闲暇在时间和空间分布上存在一定的规律,闲暇生活也表现出较为显著的特征,总体上休闲方式多样,但闲暇质量不高而且单一,并受经济和区位的影响。旅游活动已渐入农村,并将成为农村居民闲暇的重要组成。     

西方国家社区玩耍与游憩观察系统方法的应用研究及启示

随着户外游憩研究的不断深入,获取有效游憩行为和环境信息的重要性突显,美国学者麦肯奇（McKenzie）研创出社区玩耍与游憩观察系统方法（System for Observing Play and Recreation in Communities,SOPARC）能够瞬时批量高效获取户外游憩活动信息,因而在西方游憩行为研究中逐步获得广泛运用。本文使用文献检索和文献分析法,通过查阅和分析近年西方学者对社区玩耍与游憩观察系统方法的主要应用成果,归纳出西方学者对SOPARC应用研究的热点。通过西方学者应用SOPARC方法研究的特点评述,提出该方法对我国研究的若干启示：SOPARC方法科学有效,能够为我国游憩研究提供技术支撑,但引入应用需要根据中国国情进行改进;SOPARC方法应用广泛,可主要用于游憩行为调查、游憩设施和环境规划及游憩地管理中。     

Red deer land use in the northern highlands. Part 1: The resource

The exploitation of natural populations of red deer forms an important land use in large areas of the Scottish Highlands, especially the highest and most rugged parts of the region. Despite its areal significance red deer land use has been the subject of very little geographical investigation.

The ecology of red deer is an important factor in the Highland land use situation, and environmental controls on the characteristics of the red deer resource are strong. Wide spatial variations exist both in deer population densities and in stag weights. Considerable difficulties arise in regard to the availability of comprehensive population and weight data, but despite these difficulties certain areas, particularly in the borderlands between Inverness‐shire and Ross‐shire, stand out as the most productive deer areas.     

上海市民近程出游力与目的地选择评价研究

本文通过近3年的调查研究,运用旅游地理学分析方法,对影响上海市民周末旅游、一日游和休闲出行等的近程出游活动的社会经济因素进行了分析,然后对市民的目的地选择行为和感应评价作了研究。这一研究的方法和结论,无论对城市旅游、休闲产业的发展,还是对旅游地理学理论的进步,都有一定裨益。     

Estancias of Buenos Aires Province,Argentina: Rural Heritage,Sustainable Development and Tourism

Rural settlements growing crops and rearing animals are known as estancias in several South American countries. They played a prevailing role in the political and economic history of Argentina, particularly during the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. At present, many estancias are developing alternative activities, as recreation and tourism, in order to be able to subsist. The main problem lies in the fact that a non‐sustainable activity, frequently focused on the greatest economic yield, leads to the destruction of the heritage, instead of achieving its long‐term conservation. The purpose of this paper is to develop and verify a suitable model for the planning, execution and management of recreational and tourist activities in these rural settlements. As regards the scope of the concept of sustainable development, this methodology aims at achieving a balance between the recreational and tourist operation and the conservation of the rich heritage concerned.
