Illegible ethnicity and the invention of Scots-Irish narratives on the stages of Belfast and Appalachia

Theatrical stages have long been home to performances of identity, creating and sustaining legible visions of various peoples and groups for their audiences. Indeed, in the nineteenth century, the playwright/actor Dion Boucicault popularised the “stage Irishman” for Irish and American audiences alike, thus contributing to the invention of “Irish-America”. This paper examines a similar attempt in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries to query the definition of a distinct group of Irish-Americans: the Scots-Irish. Productions from Belfast, Northern Ireland, as well as from the southern Appalachian Mountains, demonstrate how the illegibility of the Scots-Irish – in other words, their status as a non-recognisable, incoherent segment of the white population in the USA – allows for narratives about this group to be highly malleable. Contemporary productions of the Scots-Irish story demonstrate the ways in which ethnic identities emerge as constructions of past and present, memory and history, and politics and culture.

Bernard of Clairvaux,material and spiritual order,and the economy of salvation

ABSTRACT

This article explores themes connected to the spiritual and the material, especially in connection with order and economy, in the thought of the Cistercian abbot Bernard of Clairvaux (1090/1–1153). It argues that these themes are particularly useful to an analysis of Bernard’s articulation of the challenge of human existence in a fallen world, and the proper role of the Church, its leaders and members, in response to wider concerns for Christian salvation and the material circumstances of twelfth-century Europe. Three treatises provide case studies for this approach, contextualised with discussion of economy in the Christian tradition, and its implications more widely in Bernard’s writing.     

孙觉《春秋经解》四库本讹误考析

以四库本为代表的孙觉《春秋经解》“十三卷”本第一、二卷内容全部冒用自孙复《春秋尊王发微》第一、二卷,这是导致史籍记载该书卷数有“十三”、“十五”卷之差异的原因所在。此“十三卷”本的讹误应当出现在宋宁宗嘉定丙子年(1226)汪纲补修之后、王应麟《玉海》著录之前这一段时期内,可能是因该书残缺而为人“访合”的结果。该书(并其《提要》)被清廷四库全书处送交“聚珍处”的抄本当是纪昀家藏本,很可能“聚珍处”在校对刊印时发现了其中的错讹,遂删改、取用原《提要》而刊印了另外一种版本,这是聚珍本不同于四库本的原因所在。     

梁启超《过渡时代论》与当代"过渡期历史观"的构造

对梁启超历史观的评价一般有两种意见,一种观点认为梁启超是中国现代史学的开创者,其主要贡献是把中国历史纳入到世界史的解释框架之内,用线性的因果关系替代了王朝更替的历史观。另一种观点认为梁启超从欧洲归来后完全放弃了他所倡导的“进步史观”,而成为了一个文化保守主义者。实际上,梁启超所采取的是一种过渡期的历史观,这种历史观既强调历史的进步是不可阻挡的一种趋势,又主张解释历史不能仅仅依赖于纯粹科学方法,而尚需运用直觉的手段,同时他又强调文化积淀而不仅仅是物质更新在文明演进中的作用,这样的阐释方法使我们有可能超越西方历史观对我们思维的长期制约,也可避免“现代”与“后现代”两种极端解释取向所造成的偏颇后果。     

"腐败有益论"的内在逻辑及其风险

“腐败有益论”的内在逻辑是:制度是僵化的、封闭的、缺乏民主支持的、一次博弈形成的,因此一定量的腐败可以起到“润滑剂”的作用。承认“腐败有益论”,必然侵蚀制度的合法性、刚性和社会心理基础,从而加速政权的衰亡。制度的改进只能依靠政权自身的民主和理性力量。承认“腐败有益论”是饮鸩止渴。     

《诗》、史互证:上博简《诗论》钩沉

《诗》、史互证是研究上古历史的重要途径,上博简为此提供了新的重要材料。上博简《诗论》“人之怨子”是对于《人之》一诗的评论。《左传》相关记载表明,此诗应当是为春秋后期人们比较熟知的齐国子尾、高强父子之事而作。在流传的过程中,此诗的大部分混入《瞻Mao》篇,小部分混入《小宛》篇。我们将这些内容析出整理后,可以基本看出《人之》一诗的原貌。《诗》中所佚篇章有些是其内容误入他诗因而失名的结果,上博简《诗论》所提到的《仲氏》、《人之》等就是比较典型的例子。     

《论衡》:一代鸿儒的自荐书

王充视著书为文之儒为儒生的最高层次,因而以《论衡》自荐。他欲标其“异”以示《论衡》之独特价值,又不得不趋于“同”以求统治者赏识。难以排解的愤懑使得他只能从命定论中寻求慰藉。王充这种复杂的心态导致了《论衡》的诸多矛盾之处。     

志贺重昂《日本风景论》简析

《日本风景论》是日本近代国粹主义代表人物志贺重昂的代表作,也是日本近代名著之一。在书中,志贺重昂试图通过展示日本特有的地理环境所带来的“洵美”风景来表明日本的景色乃至国民性堪称“卓绝万邦”,并进而表现出了日本民族优越意识、对近邻国家的轻蔑之情,以及殖民扩张意识。
