The seismic response of a continuous 4-span bridge designed according to the current Canadian seismic provisions is investigated using Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA). Different earthquake types, including shallow crustal events, interface Cascadia subduction, and deep inslab subduction are considered. The median collapse capacities calculated using different record selection methods including Conditional Mean Spectrum (CMS)-based, Uniform Hazard Spectrum (UHS)-based, and epsilon-based methods are compared. The use of the epsilon-based method generally resulted in the highest collapse capacity predictions, but the CMS-based method was less sensitive to the number of records considered in the IDA.  相似文献

The applicability of different pushover methods was analyzed on the example of a bridge, which was experimentally tested on three shake tables at the University of Nevada, Reno. The response of the bridge was quite complex. The intensity as well as the direction of the deck torsional rotations varied significantly, depending on the seismic intensity. At the low intensities, all the employed pushover methods estimated the displacements of the deck very well. In the case of strong earthquakes, the advantages of multi-mode and adaptive methods was demonstrated.  相似文献

Recent damage examples of aged steel bridge infrastructures around the world are so alarming. They intensified the importance of careful evaluation of existing structures for the feasibility of current usage and to ensure public safety. Corrosion and fatigue cracking may be the two most important types of damages in aging structures. Furthermore, recent earthquakes demonstrated potential seismic vulnerability of some types of steel bridges. Corrosion and its effects can trigger the damages caused by earthquakes, and it will be vital to understand the behavior of existing steel bridges which are corroding for decades in future severe seismic events as well. This article comprises the results of nonlinear FEM analysis of many actual corroded plates with different corrosion conditions and proposes a simple and reliable methodology to estimate remaining seismic strength and energy dissipation capacities by measuring only the minimum thickness of a corroded surface, which can be used to make rational decisions about the maintenance management plan of steel infrastructures.  相似文献

Symmetrically reinforced bridge columns with a horizontal cantilever in one direction, called C-bent columns, tend to deform predominantly in the direction of applied moment when subject to strong earthquake shaking. For this reason, the strength in the direction of applied moment is generally increased in design. This article describes the use of inelastic dynamic time history analyses with a suite of ground motion records to quantify the amount of strength increase required to minimize likely peak and permanent displacement demands. It is shown that the strength should be increased by approximately 2.3 times the applied moment in design.  相似文献

The objective of this study is two-fold: first, to assess the effects of soil-structure interaction (SSI) on the response of seismically isolated bridge piers and, second, to develop a method that considers SSI and can be easily applied to the preliminary design of bridges. Emphasis is given on pier behaviour, because piers together with the abutments are the most critical components of a bridge with a high potential for concentration of ductility demands during earthquakes. The relative importance that several parameters of the bridge-isolators-soil system play on design is examined. Conclusions and suggestions that can lead to safer and more economical isolated pier design are also presented. Cases in which SSI needs to be incorporated in seismically isolated bridge design are identified and ways to take advantage of SSI in order to enhance safety level and reduce design costs are recommended.  相似文献

Three highway bridges spanning the Missouri River flood plain were selected for evaluation of seismic site response for moderate size earthquakes emanating from the New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ) in the Midwestern United States. The NMSZ is known to be capable spawning earthquakes larger than magnitude (M) 7.0, four of which occurred in a three-month period between 1811 and 1812, and the Mw 6.0 earthquake of October 1895 centered near Charleston, Missouri. This study evaluated the likely impacts of long period motion of these historic earthquakes on three long-span highway bridges using geotechnical data obtained from recent investigations. Our results suggest site amplification between 6× and 9×, depending on the magnitude and epicentral distance. We believe that threshold magnitude for serious foundation failure and damage to these bridges is between Mw 6.5 and 6.6. Above these magnitudes widespread liquefaction is predicted, which would effect the peak horizontal acceleration and spectral accelerations, causing the ground motions to be different than predicted. Increase in amplification of the response spectra also should be expected where the periods are higher than 1.0 sec. Therefore, Mw 6.5+ earthquakes at ranges 210–260 km could be expected to engender resonant frequency problems for multiple span bridges and tall buildings (10 to 25 stories) in channel corridors containing 20 to 46 m of unconsolidated sediment.  相似文献

The unique dynamic response of skewed bridges causes them to experience more noticeable damage compared to straight bridges during seismic events. The effectiveness of different retrofit strategies on the fragility of skewed bridges can change with the skew angle. This article assesses the impact of skew angle and various retrofit strategies on the fragility of multi span continuous concrete I-girder bridges. The results indicate that the level of effectiveness of a retrofit strategy is highly dependent on the skew angle and damage state of interest and an appropriate retrofit strategy should be chosen based on the vulnerability of the components.  相似文献

This paper addresses the application of a Bayesian parameter estimation method to a regional seismic risk assessment of curved concrete bridges. For this purpose, numerical models of case-study bridges are simulated to generate multiparameter demand models of components, consisting of various uncertainty parameters and an intensity measure (IM). The demand models are constructed using a Bayesian parameter estimation method and combined with limit states to derive the parameterized fragility curves. These fragility curves are used to develop bridge-specific and bridge-class fragility curves. Moreover, a stepwise removal process in the Bayesian parameter estimation is performed to identify significant parameters affecting component demands.  相似文献
