Cruise Passengers in a Homeport: A Market Analysis

Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine cruise passengers' characteristics, preferences and their overall experience in a port of call. Based on 1,361 survey data collected from passengers in the port of call of Cartagena, during the third quarter of 2009, a three-step multivariate market segment analysis is employed. First, a correspondence analysis is run to reveal the underlying factors in the data; second, based on the correspondence analysis, a hierarchical cluster investigation is performed to segment the sample into homogeneous groups; third, a decision tree is computed to characterise each group. The cluster analysis identifies six distinct market segments differentiated by nationality, satisfaction, safety perception and expenditure. The findings imply several policy directions. In particular, institutions should enhance the perception of safety in Cartagena to guarantee repeated visits, an ad hoc marketing policy may encourage revisit by young South Americans, and managers should extend the inland visiting time that is likely to produce local multiplier effects.     

Technology-nonhuman-child assemblages: reconceptualising rural childhood roaming

This paper argues for reconceptualising how children use technology ‘outdoors’ as a technology-nonhuman-child assemblage, or roaming pathway. Founded in contemporary fears about children’s reduced opportunities to access nature and roam in rural environments, in part due to the ubiquitous presence of technology in their lives, we instead illustrate how the agencies of technologies and plants are folded into children’s outdoor roaming. Combining visual methods, video analysis and qualitative geovisualisation, and in collaboration with the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority, this paper exposes how assemblages are contingently brought into being through the actions of what technologies, plants and children do together. We demonstrate how the agentic capacities of non-humans and technologies are assembled through children’s imaginative interaction with them, and how these imaginative interactions make such agencies visible.

Sans résumé juin 2003 ?Mon travail a toujours cherché à concilier vérité et beauté, mais lorsque j'avais à choisir entre l'une et l'autre, généralement je préférais la beauté.? HermannWeyl Docteur en histoire de la philosophie, Dipartimento di filologia classica e di scienze filosofiche de l'université de Lecce (Italie), mes recherches portent principalement sur la philosophie de la mathématique et de la physique et sur la pensée d'Hermann Weyl. Le présent travail constitue une synthèse de mon doctorat de recherche intituléL'Unité physico-mathématique dans la pensée épistémologique d'Hermann Weyl. Ce mémoire fut achevé en juin 2003. Je me dois de remercier Charles Alunni qui, à cette occasion, comme pour cet article, m'a beaucoup aidé par sa discussion de la plupart des thèses présentées; ses très nombreuses suggestions se sont avérées extrêmement précieuses.
