Cyclic Response of Concrete Beams Reinforced by Plain Bars

There are many reinforced concrete structures throughout the world that have been built in the past decades that lack appropriate seismic details and reinforced by plain bars. To study the behavior of such buildings, seven beams have been tested under cyclic and monotonic load. The specimens include substandard specimens, with deficient seismic details and reinforced by plain bars, specimens designed in accordance with ACI-318-99 but reinforced by plain bars, and standard specimens reinforced by deformed bars. The tests indicate that the substandard specimens sustain relatively large slip of longitudinal bars, separation of specimen relative to foundation and sliding at large deformation phase, low initial stiffness ratio, limited lateral displacement capacity, and loss of nominal yield strength. The specimens reinforced by plain bars in accordance with ACI-318-99 perform almost similar to standard specimens with deformed bars, in terms of elastic stiffness and lateral displacement ductility; but, they sustain larger slip, and smaller yield strength. Failure of all specimens reinforced by plain bars is characterized by flexural cracks without visible shear failure. Residual shear strength of substandard specimens is modeled by dowel action of longitudinal bars to predict a lower limit for lateral strength of the specimens.     

Colonialism Otherwise and the Poetics of Solidarity: A Methodological Intervention De-b/ordering Kashmir

This paper reflects deeply on possibilities for developing solidarity with Kashmiri freedom struggles by mobilising a memorialisation praxis informed by poetics. We coin the term “colonialism otherwise” to describe the particular instruments and effects of postcolonial colonialism as they appear in the intimate space of family narratives, memories, and feelings. Foregrounding the works of the Kashmiri poet, essayist, and filmmaker, Uzma Falak, we write our memorialisations to respond to the poet's demands to bear witness to Kashmiri people's abjection. Our memorialisation praxis is guided by the questions: how do we know Kashmir as a place, and relatedly, what are the political limitations of our articulated solidarity with the anti-colonial struggle for azaadi?

Negotiating mobility in gendered spaces: case of Pakistani women doctors

Through their gendered spatial practices, women in Pakistan re-negotiate and contest the multiple social and material restrictions in their daily mobility to reclaim the urban transit spaces, specifically, roads. Ethnographic research on the automobile use and driving with the women doctors in Lahore, Pakistan reveal the relationship between these strategic practices and the educational and occupational choices of women. These spatially embedded, intentional practices of women doctors, contingent on their social and economic positions, are directly linked to the emerging gendered identities and changing social and material gendered boundaries in Pakistani society. Moreover, these changing spaces are part of on-going flux of shifting power relations between traditional patriarchy and capitalism.     

Generation of Multiple Earthquake Accelerograms Compatible with Spectrum Via the Wavelet Packet Transform and Stochastic Neural Networks

The principal purpose of this article is to present a novel methodology based on wavelet packet transform techniques and stochastic neural networks to generate more artificial earthquake accelerograms from available data, which are compatible with specified response spectra or the design spectra. The proposed method uses the decomposing capabilities of wavelet packet transform on earthquake accelerograms, and the learning abilities of stochastic neural network to expand the knowledge of the inverse mapping from response spectrum to coefficients of wavelet packet transform of earthquake accelerogram. This methodology results in a stochastic ensemble of wavelet packet transform coefficients of earthquake accelerograms and, they are used to the generate accelerograms applying the inverse wavelet packet transform. Finally, an interpretive example is presented which uses an ensemble of recorded accelerograms to train and test the neural network, aiming at the demonstration of the method effectiveness.     

Good Iranian,Bad Iranian: Representations of Iran and Iranians in Time and Newsweek (1998–2009)

This article analyzes the ways in which Iran and Iranians are represented in Western news media sources. Through detailed textual analysis of articles in Time and Newsweek between 1998 and 2009, it demonstrates that journalistic representations of Iran and Iranians are not simply efforts aimed at describing the real Iran, but rather form the basis of what Said refers to as a powerful “community of interpretation” that often reflects and reproduces certain xenophobic stereotypes of non-Western foreign subjects. While some shifts in Western media representations of Iranians have occurred in the thirty years since the revolution, the underlying ontological assumptions of these representations have remained remarkably durable. That is to say, the dominant representational discourse found in these newsmagazines depicts the political behavior of Iranians on the basis of essentialized notions of Persian and/or Islamic civilization, while very often emphasizing the taken for granted superiority of the West. Earlier Orientalist discourses focus on the difference of non-Western foreign subjects by denigrating them as fundamentally anti-modern and incapable of political, cultural and economic development without Western intervention. This article presents an unmistakable discursive pattern in American journalism whereby certain Iranians are incorporated into Western civilization by virtue of their embrace of a Western modernity.
