Comparisons of conodont and trilobite communities from the Arenig-Llanvirn of northern Spitsbergen show that both groups were influenced by the same environmental factors, related to a shallow to deep water profile at the western edge of the proto-Atlantic Ocean (Iapetus). The majority of both conodonts and trilobites had benthic or nektobenthic habits; a few genera of both groups were pelagic. Temperature was a major influence on the distribution of conodonts; similar genera could occur on both sides of ancient oceans (e.g. Iapetus) given the same temperature regime. 相似文献

Emma Smith oversaw the compilation of the first Mormon hymnal in 1835 and then prepared a second hymnal in 1841. This article contextualises and discusses Smith's significant assignment, and considers how a woman's hymn selections influenced early Mormonism. It also considers what Smith's hymnals reveal about her own life story and what her life story reveals about her hymn selections. While Smith's first hymnal highlights the emphasis she placed on immediately establishing a city of Zion in preparation for the millennial reign of a triumphal Christ, her second hymnal underscores the need to develop and foster a personal relationship with a merciful Saviour. Smith's 1835 hymnal emphasises being a Zion people immediately, whereas her 1841 hymnal, compiled in the context of intense personal and collective trials and religious persecution, highlights the importance of striving to become a more Zion‐like people over time. The different doctrinal emphases reflects their respective Mormon cultures at the time of compilation, and captures how the church responded to and grappled with its failure to establish Zion immediately. As a compiler of hymns, Smith clearly plays a significant role in Mormon history, while also demonstrating how women could impact their particular religious communities. 相似文献

Abstract This study focuses on hospitality in Tanzania, as a topic of historical importance. Although there are many references to hospitality within both primary and secondary sources and anecdotal accounts, hospitality is effectively unexplored in the historical scholarship for any part of sub-Saharan Africa. Looking at southwestern Tanzania between 1600 and 1900 as a case study, this work aims to make hospitality, for the first time, primary focus of historical study rather than a peripheral and passing allusion. Towards that end, I examine why and when some societies chose to extend hospitality to outsiders and strangers. In southwestern Tanzania between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, extending hospitality to guests, strangers, and ‘foreign residents’ was a paramount value and social expectation, which could result in inclusion of outsiders. Hospitality towards newcomers became a cultural norm. I contend that direct, immediate, and personal gain was far less important than a circulation of hospitality. In the long term social and political institutions were buoyed by this moral expectation. In order to demonstrate these claims, I employ proverbs, oral traditions, and explorers’ accounts as historical evidence for hospitality's enduring salience in shifting contexts in southwestern Tanzania from precolonial times into the twentieth century. 相似文献

The rostroconch mollusc Eopteria aiteneria sp. nov. is described from the Late Ordovician Angrensor Formation of north-eastern Central Kazakhstan; it is the first and only known representative of this group from the Ordovician of central Asia. By the beginning of the Late Ordovician Eopteria and the family Eopteriidae were on the verge of extinction and the new Kazakhstan species represents the youngest preserved record of the family in the Ordovician. It is likely that the group found a refuge in the diverse, but rather conservative, faunal assemblage of the Hiberno-Salairian type associated with Late Ordovician carbonate algal build-ups and mud mounds which spread widely during the late Caradoc to mid Ashgill across Kazakhstanian volcanic island arcs and microplates. 相似文献
