We exploit a recent generalization of the Thrust Network Analysis (TNA) to analyse masonry structures of extremely complicated and audacious geometry such as helicoidal staircases. Actually, differently from available methods, based on ad-hoc solutions holding for each particular structure, the TNA allows for studying the equilibrium of structures of arbitrary shape by invoking the principles of limit analysis of masonry structures dictated by Heyman. Four paradigmatic monumental staircases, with increased degree of complexity, have been selected as case studies in order to show the versatility and accuracy of the proposed approach. The results entailed from the generalized TNA are also successfully compared, for the first time in the literature, with those related to the adoption of available analytical methods for the analysis of no-tension membranes. 相似文献

This article explores the practice of ‘virginity testing’ by British immigration officers in the late 1970s through the internal documents of the Home Office held at the National Archives in London. By analysing these documents, we argue that the ‘virginity testing’ controversy demonstrates the intersectionality of discrimination faced by migrant women from the Indian subcontinent attempting to enter Britain in the 1970s. Previous discussions of the practice have focused on either the dimension of ‘race’ or gender as the determining factor behind this invasive procedure, but this article shows that both dimensions are of equal importance in explaining why immigration officers undertook ‘testing’ for virginity during border control investigations. The emphasis within the immigration control system on preventing ‘bogus’ migration informed how immigration officers processed potential migrants and this framework of suspicion allowed the practice of ‘virginity testing’ to occur. 相似文献

This article analyses the experience of the second Prodi government from the standpoint of its political communication. The opening part contextualises the case by placing it within the broader framework of coalition governments generally, and briefly outlines the critical elements that, in Italy, prevent any majority from making a genuinely strategic use of communication in the policy-making process. The second part focuses on Prodi's poor communication, highlighting both its limits and the attempts at improvement made by the leader and his staff in 2007. Finally, the third part examines the journalistic coverage of the centre-left majority and considers the trend in public approval for the premier and the government, emphasising the problems that emerged on each side. 相似文献
