The essay evaluates the distinctiveness and importance of thework of Timothy Reuter, based on a major recent collection ofhis writings. It suggests that Reuter's roots in both the Germanand English scholarly traditions, combined with his unusuallybroad historical interests, enabled him to bring unique perspectivesto bear upon the development of European political institutions, mentalities, and modes of behaviour during a period—theninth to twelfth centuries—which is still often ascribedfundamental formative importance in European life. In particular,Reuter succeeded in transcending some of the structural limitationsof both the English and (post-war, West-) German historiographiesof the central medieval period. 相似文献

This paper examines ironworking practices and traditions among the Mawu (Akpafu) and Lolobi communities of the northern Volta
Region of Ghana. It compares them with other accounts gathered from published sources and observations made during fieldwork
conducted in the 1970s. It describes the processes of mining, smelting, and tool manufacturing from reconstructions and oral
histories and delineates the transformations that have been worked on the content of the tradition in the past 100 years.
The narratives of the migrations of the Mawu, gleaned from their own elders, from ground surface evidence, and from written
reports are considered in the context of archaeological and historical evidence from other parts of southern Ghana. The conventional
picture of the movement of the Mawu/Lolobi communities is one of displacement by incoming groups, but the conclusion that
they have been pushed within the past 150 years into the very district containing the greatest concentration of iron-rich
deposits in this whole mountain area is given critical examination. It is likely that the Togo hills have been the site of
ironworking for several centuries. It is, therefore, suggested that these communities may represent the distillation of a
formerly more widespread set of such communities which existed wherever iron ore was to be found in southeast Ghana. 相似文献

AbstractThe energy and mineral resource base of Southeast Asia is relatively modest by international standards. Nevertheless, Chinese energy and mining companies have been investing heavily in the region over recent years, in comparison with multinational companies and state-backed companies from other Asian countries. This paper applies a framework derived from the field of business studies to analyze why the scale of China’s engagement in Southeast Asia has become so great and how the motivations vary between the different energy and resource industries. The motivations for these activities reflect a mix of corporate and state objectives. Corporate objectives include securing energy or resource supply chains, increasing or diversifying their asset base, and enhancing their profits or market share. The motivations of the government range from straightforward support of the companies for the purpose of industrial strategy and security of resource supply, to development assistance and regional strategic positioning. The different motivations of the oil and gas, hydropower, and mining industries arise from the particular character of each market, both within China and globally. Southeast Asia has the twin advantages of geographic and apparent cultural proximity to China. Nevertheless, inexperience and a desire to catch up with their international peers have resulted in companies applying low social and environmental standards in some high profile projects. The subsequent disputes, together with the current low level of resource prices, may constrain the further growth of Chinese investment in the near future. 相似文献
