Effects of Different Record Selection Methods on the Transverse Seismic Response of a Bridge in South Western British Columbia

The seismic response of a continuous 4-span bridge designed according to the current Canadian seismic provisions is investigated using Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA). Different earthquake types, including shallow crustal events, interface Cascadia subduction, and deep inslab subduction are considered. The median collapse capacities calculated using different record selection methods including Conditional Mean Spectrum (CMS)-based, Uniform Hazard Spectrum (UHS)-based, and epsilon-based methods are compared. The use of the epsilon-based method generally resulted in the highest collapse capacity predictions, but the CMS-based method was less sensitive to the number of records considered in the IDA.     

Probabilistic Characteristics of Seismic Ductility Demand of SDOF Systems with Bouc-Wen Hysteretic Behavior

This study investigates probabilistic characteristics of the peak ductility demand of inelastic single-degree-of-freedom systems. The hysteretic behavior of structural systems is represented by the Bouc-Wen model, which takes various hysteretic curves with degradation and pinching behavior into account, and a prediction equation of the peak ductility demand is developed. The application of the developed equation in reliability analysis of structures subject to earthquake loading is illustrated. The results indicate that the effects due to degradation and pinching behavior on the peak ductility demand as well as the reliability of structures can be significant, especially for stiff structures.

Income Inequality and Wealth Concentration in the Recent Crisis

This article shows that the increase of income inequality and global wealth concentration was an important driver for the financial and Eurozone crisis. The high levels of income inequality resulted in balance of payment imbalances and growing debt levels. Rising wealth concentration contributed to the crisis because the increasing asset demand from the rich played a key role in the growth of the structured credit market and enabled poor and middle‐income households to accumulate increasing amounts of debt. This analysis thereby puts both income and wealth inequality at the epicentre of the recent crisis, and as crucial for social scientists analysing the causes of the crisis. The authors’ findings suggest that the policy response to the crisis should not be limited to financial regulation but must involve policies to address inequality by increasing the bargaining power of labour as well as redistributive tax policies.
