THE ORIGIN OF MICRO-RELIEF ON TILL SHEETS OF THE CONESTOGO LAKE AREA, ONTARIO

The origin of micro-relief on till sheets of the Conestogo lake area, Ontario, is discussed. The micro-relief constitutes an extensive, integrated system of swales that represents a drainage network which functioned under periglacial conditions in the late Wisconsinan. At many locations within the study area, this drainage exploited the micro-relief of polygonal patterned ground. The present low-order stream system has resulted from contraction of this Pleistocene system. A qualitative modification of Devries' Groundwater Outcrop Erosion Model is developed to explain drainage evolution at the Pleistocene-Holocene transition. Today, the swales are routes for surface and shallow sub-surface flow from the gently sloping interfluves of the study area.
L'origine du microrelief des dépôts de moraines de fond dans la région du lac Conestogo, Ontario, est discutée. Le microrelief constitue un système de bas-fonds extensif et intégrè qui représente un réseau de drainage qui fonctionnait sous des conditions périglaciaires pendant le Wisconsinien supérieur. Ce drainage a emprunté le microrelief des sols polygonaux à plusieurs endroits à l'intérieur de la région d'éude. le système actuel de rivières de bas ordre est le résultat de la contraction de cet ancien système du Pléistocène. Une modification qualitative du modèle de Devries d'érosion par affleurement de la nappe souterraine (Groundwater Outcrop Erosion Model) est développée pour expliquer 1'évolution du drainage pendant la transition Pléistocene-Holocène dans cette région. Aujourd'hui, les bas-fonds forment des routes pour le ruissellement et I'écoulement hypodermique des interiluves à pentes douces de la région d'étude.     

METROPOLITAN DOMINANCE AND FOREIGN OWNERSHIP IN THE CANADIAN URBAN SYSTEM

This paper examines the concept of metropolitan dominance as measured by the concentration of corporate activity in large urban centres in the Canadian urban system. Specifically, it explores the extent of corporate concentration in various sectors of the economy; isolates those urban centres in which that concentration occurs; and identifies the extent and location of international penetration of the Canadian economy.
Dans cette étude, nous examinons le concept de l'importance des métropoles en fonction de la concentration des diverses entreprises dans le systeme urbain du Canada. Plus spécifiquement, nous examinons le degré de cette concentration dans divers secteurs économiques; nous isolons les centres urbain ou a lieu cette concentration; nous identifions l'étendue et les points de pénetration internationale dans l'économie du Canada.     

Continuity and change: prospects for civil—military relations in Turkey

Early indications suggest that the appointment of General Yaþar Büyükanýt as chief of the Turkish general staff (TGS) at the end of August 2006 marked a new era in civil‐military relations in the country. Yet it would be a mistake to see the military's more forthright attitude under Büyükanýt simply as a return to the past. Civil‐military relations in Turkey have always been characterized by a combination of continuity and change. Both the legal basis for and the TGS's own perceptions of the role and responsibilities of the military have remained unchanged for over 70 years. However, the extent and the manner in which the military has influenced politics have always varied. In recent years the TGS's ability to ensure that government policy remains within acceptable parameters has been primarily based on its public prestige rather than the prospect of a full‐blooded military coup. Although the TGS has always been the most respected institution in the country, the Turkish public's willingness to tolerate, or even to encourage, its assumption of a more active political role has traditionally varied according to changes in the prevailing domestic political circumstances: falling during times of stability and confidence and rising during times of uncertainty. In early 2007 both the country and the government of the moderately Islamist Justice and Development Party (JDP) appeared to have lost momentum and direction. In such an environment, and in the continued absence of an eff ective political opposition, many Turks will once again look to the country's military to prevent the JDP from increasing its control over the apparatus of state, starting with the appointment of a new president in April 2007. To date the JDP has always backed down in the face of pressure from the TGS. However, whether it will continue to do so, and what the TGS can or will do if the JDP defies its warnings, currently all remain unclear.     

Jack Goody: The Anthropology of Unequal Society

In almost four decades Jack Goody has published a score of books seeking to explain the divergence of Africa from the Eurasian continent, and latterly to refute historical claims of western superiority to Asia. Since the millennium, he has sought to clarify his own vision of modern capitalism at a time when western hegemony is coming under pressure from globalization. Yet this achievement has not received the recognition from anthropologists that it deserves. This article, in reviewing six books published during the last decade, makes a case for reassessing Goody's project from the mid-1970s until now. It singles out two books for special attention, The Theft of History and his latest volume, Metals, Culture and Capitalism. A consistent theme of his recent work is to juxtapose his own account of the history of western capitalism with those of Marx, Weber and other writers in the classical tradition of social theory. Jack Goody remains to this day an anthropologist whose sensibility was formed by long-term ethnographic fieldwork. But he knew that, if he aspired to throw light on the human predicament as a whole, he would have to become a world historian too.
