Korean rural settlements are generally clustered at midslope sites on the flanks of hills or mountains. The settlement sites and forms were determined both by Fengshui and by palrilineal inheritance system. Feng-shui, intertwined with people's needs, intentions and imaginations about life, influenced the concept of an ideal settlement site. Palrilineal system of inheritance tied with Confucianism encouraged the branch households to cluster around a main household. Folk oral tradition and written genealogy serve as sources for the reconstruction of Korean settlement morphology.  相似文献

Hume's repeated mentions of the vicissitudes of civilization have thus far been neglected, overlooked, or misinterpreted by Hume scholars. Although his references to the “death” or “ruin” of a nation are somewhat hyperbolic, his cyclical view of history was neither mere rhetoric nor necessarily pessimistic. This paper aims to show that Hume's notion of historical fluctuations was deeply connected with his understanding of the universality of human nature. It also placed Hume in a strategic position from which he could criticize both those who believed in the possibility of perpetual progress and those who forecast the successive decline of the human world. To explore Hume's position in more detail, we must first examine the reasons his argument was often misunderstood, especially in the context of the “rich country–poor country” debate. We also need to examine how Hume's view of the cyclical nature of history, consistently held, can be reconciled with his status as one of the champions of modern civilization.  相似文献

Due to the complex and heterogeneous construction of suspended ceiling systems, current standards provide only limited guidance for their seismic design. Simplified uniaxial numerical models of suspended ceiling systems are developed based on the experimental observation. Main runners with tributary ceiling area and grid connections in the longitudinal direction are modeled using lumped-masses and nonlinear connection springs. The proposed numerical models can be used as simple computational tools to explore the dynamic behavior and to estimate the design forces. Possible changes to the current standard design that suggest a more rational distribution of ceiling inertia forces are also discussed.  相似文献

Damage of nonstructural components during past seismic events was shown to be not only a critical threat to life safety in extreme cases but also led to substantial reduction of functionality of buildings and other facilities. Because of the complex construction of nonstructural and architectural components, current standards provide only limited guidance for the seismic design. Suspended ceiling systems are among the less understood important nonstructural/architectural components in buildings for which design standards provide limited guidance. To understand the dynamic behavior of suspended ceiling systems, a series of full scale shake table tests of 20 ft × 53 ft and 20 ft × 20 ft ceiling systems were conducted at the Structural Engineering and Earthquake Simulation laboratory (SEESL) at University at Buffalo (UB). For the full scale dynamic testing, a new test frame providing a continuous suspended ceiling area of 1,060 ft2 was constructed on the tandem shake tables and was equipped with an open-loop shake table compensation procedure. The combined designs of the physical frame and of the shake table motion controllers allowed simulating the required floor/roof motion according to ICC-ES AC156 standard at the roof of the test structure. Various test configurations were selected in order to determine the influence of different system conditions and the effects or efficiency of various protective systems required by the current standard ASTM E580 for seismic design. Based on the test data and the failure mechanisms observed, damage states are defined, and fragility curves are developed. The results of the fragility analysis show that a ceiling system becomes more vulnerable as (a) it is subjected to multi-directional input motions, (b) heavier tiles are installed, (c) the size of a ceiling area increases, and (d) lateral restraints are not installed. In addition, simplified numerical models that can capture the special behavior of ceiling systems are developed and presented in a companion paper. This paper presents the experimental study of large area suspended ceiling systems involving test setup and configurations, test motions generated by a unique control system, and basic lessons gained from the experiments.  相似文献

Disproportionate information processing theory asserts that sudden, dramatic changes punctuate otherwise stable growth patterns in U.S. policy and budget processes. The present paper uses state government sub-functional expenditures to explore what factors cause budget stability and punctuations. First, the findings in the present paper generally confirm the observations made in other studies that distributions of governmental budgets are Paretian. Second, while future research is warranted to identify more specific causes, this preliminary analysis suggests that institutional frictions and information oversupply tend to increase both budget stability and punctuations. It also suggests that availability of efficient information reduces budget stability but not necessarily budget punctuations. However, when examined at the level of different fund-type expenditures, which have differing degrees of institutional friction and availability of information that can be efficiently processed, more subtle and distinguishable differences in patterns of budget stability and punctuations emerge, which was not accounted for in disproportionate information processing theory.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This article focuses on Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House, designed by Edwin Landseer Lutyens and unveiled to the public in 1924 at the British Empire Exhibition. The Dolls’ House epitomised the characteristics of Britain as a nation and an empire through its English exterior and British world objects within. Marginalised in academic discourses and regarded as a plaything, this article brings the Dolls’ House back to discourses of British material and visual culture as well as Lutyens scholarship. To this end, it analyses how the design and contents of the House encapsulated the British imperial world and materialised Britain’s position in the postwar world.  相似文献
