Assessment of landfill seismic response necessitates the availability of reliable dynamic material properties. During the past decade, geophysical surveys and computational studies have been conducted to investigate the seismic response of the Operating Industries, Inc. (OII) landfill in Southern California. In this paper, a survey and summary of available research results is presented. In addition, a set of Oil input-output seismic records during six earthquakes is thoroughly analysed. Spectral analyses are conducted to shed light on the landfill dynamic response characteristics. A simple shear beam model is found to be useful in modelling the landfill resonant behaviour. System identification techniques are employed to estimate the landfill stiffness and damping properties. These properties are defined by minimising the difference between computed and recorded acceleration response spectra at the landfill top. The identified stiffness properties are found to be near the lower bound of those documented through geophysical measure-ments. Identified damping of about 5% (at resonance) is within the range of earlier investigations. Comparisons of the computed and recorded accelerations show: (I) effectiveness of a linear viscous shear beam model in simulating the landfill dynamic behaviour, for the recorded small to moderate levels of dynamic excitation (up to 0.26 g peak lateral acceleration), and (ii) potential of the employed system identification procedure for analysis of input-output seismic motions.  相似文献

Computational simulations are presented for a unique series of centrifuge tests conducted to assess the performance of liquefaction countermeasure techniques. In these centrifuge tests, the dynamic response of an embankment supported on a liquefiable foundation (medium sand) is investigated. The experimental series included: (i) a benchmark test without a liquefaction countermeasure, (ii) foundation densiflcation below the embankment toe, and (iii) use of a sheet-pile containment enclosure below the embankment. This series of experiments documents a wide range of practical liquefaction response mechanisms (including countermeasure implementation). In order to numerically simulate the above centrifuge tests, a new calibrated soil stress-strain constitutive model is incorporated into a two-phase (solid-fluid) fully coupled Finite Element formulation. Comparison of the computational and experimental results demonstrates: (i) importance of post-liquefaction dilative soil behavior in dictating the dynamic response and deformation characteristics of the embankment-foundation system, and (ii) capabilities and limitations of the numerical modeling procedure.  相似文献

Recent research clearly shows the importance of including the vertical component of earthquake ground motion in seismic analysis and design. In addition, pioneering studies [e.g., Elnashai and Papazoglou (1997)] have explored and documented the characteristics of available near-field vertical ground motion records. As a follow-up, this paper complements earlier studies, and investigates additional far-field records and available downhole array vertical motion records. A total of 111 free-field strong motion records (from California) and available downhole array records are employed. Compared to near-field records, far-field records generally contain more energy at longer periods. Based on the available data, response spectra are presented for near-field and far-field records respectively. The currently scarce downhole-array vertical motion records show that significant amplification may occur within the top 10-20 m soil layers. A simple one-dimensional (ID) vertical wave propagation model did not appear adequate for modelling the observed downhole array response. In using such a simplified model, very high viscous damping in the range of 15-25% was needed to match the recorded downhole vertical response, even for small tremors. Additional data and research are required [Beresnev et al., 2002] towards the development of a rational vertical motion site response analysis procedure.  相似文献

The aim of this article is to explore how popular historical knowledge disrupts the spacetimes produced by imperial power. To this end, I present my reading of a shrine guide that was composed by Asil al-Din Waʿiz in 1460 and that documents the city of Herat's blessed dead. This work, the Maqsad al-Iqbal, anchors Herat to space and time by both the graves of the city's myriad saints and the tales told about them locally. I investigate the ways in which the popular historical knowledge recorded in the Maqsad al-Iqbal offers a counterpoint to the ideas of Herat's past that have been generated by dynastic chronicles, luxurious visual arts, and the grandeur of royal construction projects. I am interested not only in alternative historical visions themselves but in how nonelite productions of history resist easy adaptation into a hegemonic scheme and how the dead themselves are constantly at work in our narratives, breaking down every attempt at a singular, coherent past.  相似文献
