For the first time since the 1970s, Canberra cannot assume the joint facilities will continue to underpin the Australia–US alliance. Intelligence cooperation via outer space, described as the ‘strategic essence’ of this relationship, is poised for transformation. New technologies are being developed for satellite communication, with laser systems capable of bypassing ground control stations outside US territory. As a result, the one indispensable role for Australia in US national security—hosting infrastructure to relay intelligence about nuclear and missile activity—could become irrelevant in the years ahead. With questions raised about the Trump administration’s commitment to security partners and the risk of US disengagement from Asia, these findings have implications for Australian alliance diplomacy. If intelligence ties bind these countries together at present, Canberra can expect some risk of loosening in the future and will need to think carefully about the development of national intelligence resources over the long term.  相似文献

The results of an experimental study on the effect of the joints between the blocks on the ultimate bearing capacity of a multi-drum column loaded to centric vertical force and horizontal force in the middle of its height are shown. The column is approximately 2.5 m high, with one hinge at the top and another hinge at the bottom. Four types of joints between the blocks were considered: a dry joint (column C-DJ) and joints with stone powder (column C-SPJ), lead (column C-PBJ), and epoxy (column C-EPJ). The applied vertical and horizontal forces, horizontal displacement, vertical strains, and horizontal circumferential strains in the middle of the column height, as well as shortening of the column, were measured. Under axial compression, ratios between the ultimate load bearing capacities of tested columns were C-EPJ: C-DJ: C-SPJ: C-PBJ = 1: 0.68: 0.59: 0.51. The bearing capacity of the tested columns with regard to the horizontal force depended on the level of the applied centric compression force. Columns with soft joints (C-PBJ, C-SPJ) had the largest shortening and the largest horizontal displacements for the equal forces.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This article aims to disclose that the deformation and damages of the one-way straight mortise-tenon (OWSMT) joint, the key force transmission connection of traditional wood buildings, lead to a significant reduction in structural safety of ancient timber structure. For this purpose, the damage of mortise joint in practical engineering wassimulated by controlling the gap and width between mortise and tenon. A total of 23 groups of scaled 1:2 OWSMT joint specimens were fabricated and tested subjected to cyclic loadings, and the hysteretic curves of OWSMT joint with different damage degrees were obtained. Through skeleton curves, stiffness degradation curves, and equivalent viscous damping curves of the OWSMT joint, the seismic performance of damaged wood joints was quantitatively analyzed. The results show that, with the increase in the gap between the tenon and the mortise, the slip between them became increasingly obvious, the fullness and peak of the hysteresis curve gradually decreased, the gradient of the skeleton curve also dropped, and both the stiffness degradation curve and the equivalent viscous damping curve are gradually reduced. The research findings shed new light on the seismic assessment of aging timber buildings.  相似文献
