Although characterized by low seismicity, the Monferrato area of north‐western Italy was affected by earthquakes, of magnitude M5.1 and M4.8, in 2000 and 2001. At the same time, marked changes were recorded in water temperature and chemistry in several wells within the epicentral area. In May 2004, an automatic network for the continuous monitoring of groundwater was installed in selected wells to study the phenomenon. Here, we report on data collected during a 3‐year period of groundwater monitoring. During the first year, episodes of water heating (by up to 20°C) were observed in one monitored well. The temporal analysis of the seismic activity recorded in the area revealed as almost all seismic events occurred during the period of elevated water temperatures. The similar timing of earthquakes and groundwater‐temperature anomalies suggests that both may be triggered by the same processes acting in the crust.  相似文献

At the Dixie Valley geothermal field, Nevada, USA, fluid boiling triggered the precipitation of carbonate scale minerals in concentric bands around tubing inserted into production well 28–33. When the tubing was removed, this mineral scale was sampled at 44 depth intervals between the wellhead and 1227 m depth. These samples provide a unique opportunity to evaluate the effects of fluid boiling on the scale mineralogy and geochemistry of the vapor and liquid phase. In this study, the mineralogy of the scale deposits and the composition of the fluid inclusion gases trapped in the mineral scales were analyzed. The scale consists mainly of calcite from 670–1112 m depth and aragonite from 1125 to 1227 m depth, with traces of quartz and Mg‐smectite. Mineral textures, including hopper growth, twinning, and fibrous growth in the aragonite and banded deposits of fine grained calcite crystals, are the result of progressive boiling. The fluid inclusion noncondensable gas was dominated by CO2. However, significant variations in He relative to N2 and Ar provide evidence that the geothermal reservoir consists of mixed source deeply circulating reservoir water and shallow, air saturated meteoric water. Gas analyses for many inclusions also showed higher CH4 and H2 relative to CO2 than measured in gas sampled from this well, other production wells, and fumaroles. These inclusions are interpreted to have trapped CH4‐ and H2‐enriched gas resulting from early stages of boiling.  相似文献

Generation of fluids during metamorphism can significantly influence the fluid overpressure, and thus the fluid flow in metamorphic terrains. There is currently a large focus on developing numerical reactive transport models, and with it follows the need for analytical solutions to ensure correct numerical implementation. In this study, we derive both analytical and numerical solutions to reaction‐induced fluid overpressure, coupled to temperature and fluid flow out of the reacting front. All equations are derived from basic principles of conservation of mass, energy and momentum. We focus on contact metamorphism, where devolatilization reactions are particularly important owing to high thermal fluxes allowing large volumes of fluids to be rapidly generated. The analytical solutions reveal three key factors involved in the pressure build‐up: (i) The efficiency of the devolatilizing reaction front (pressure build‐up) relative to fluid flow (pressure relaxation), (ii) the reaction temperature relative to the available heat in the system and (iii) the feedback of overpressure on the reaction temperature as a function of the Clapeyron slope. Finally, we apply the model to two geological case scenarios. In the first case, we investigate the influence of fluid overpressure on the movement of the reaction front and show that it can slow down significantly and may even be terminated owing to increased effective reaction temperature. In the second case, the model is applied to constrain the conditions for fracturing and inferred breccia pipe formation in organic‐rich shales owing to methane generation in the contact aureole.  相似文献

In this paper we use a small number of in-depth interviews with parents with primary school children to examine social mixing and friendship practices in two super-diverse North London boroughs. In these complex geographical contexts, characterized by gentrification processes and old and new migrations, we suggest that primary schools are convergent places where adults and children from different backgrounds are likely to meet and interact, and the paper explores the extent to which adults and children, thrown together in and through these sites, negotiate relationships with those who are differently socially and culturally situated to themselves. Informed by the interview narratives, the paper highlights the importance of focusing on the micro, quotidian ways in which differences in social and/or ethnic background shape those relationships and it explores some instances of the ways in which those differences are routinely encountered, managed and/or avoided. In this way the paper contributes theoretical and empirical nuance to current concerns around difference and diversity and the interactions of complex urban populations by ‘adding’ social class to everyday multiculture perspectives and everyday multiculture perspectives to urban middle class debates.  相似文献

The time series of two continuously operating gas monitoring stations at Oldřišská and Nový Kostel located along seismoactive faults in the epicentral area of the NW Bohemian swarm earthquakes (Czech Republic) are compared with water level fluctuations in two boreholes positioned along these faults and with gas flux variations of a mofette at the Soos mofette field at 9 km distance. The seasonal trend of the monitored CO2 concentration with a maximum in November and a minimum in March/April is governed by groundwater temperatures, superimposed in spring by soil temperatures. CO2 concentration variations identified at Oldřišská are also reflected in gas flux variations in the Soos mofette and/or water level fluctuations of two boreholes. Variations in the gas monitoring recordings of station at Nový Kostel are also linked with variations at Oldřišská. In all data sets, diurnal variations generated by earth tides occur, reflecting a daily stress – fault permeability cycle. Additional stress interferes with this cycle. Significant, abrupt changes are attributed to geodynamic processes linked with seismic events, as revealed by local seismicity or by the transient of waves of a strong remote earthquake. Simultaneous variations of the gas concentrations in the Nový Kostel area and in the gas flux in the Soos point to an interconnected hydraulic conductive fault systems present in the northern part of the Cheb Basin. Sharp falls in gas concentration, during or subsequent to, earthquake swarms may reflect fault compression associated with impeded gas migration. However, gas variations also occur in periods without seismic activity, indicating changes in fault permeability were caused by local aseismic fault movements, as revealed by events with opposite trends in the gas recordings at Oldřišská, Nový Kostel and the Soos. Therefore, a mathematical approach to establish a correlation between seismicity and gas geochemical variations is not possible.  相似文献

Walter Moxon, MD, FRCP lived, practiced medicine, taught and wrote in the mid- to late- nineteenth-century Victorian England, mostly at Guy's Hospital, London. He was widely informed in the “Art of Physic,” writing on a range of issues from cerebral lateralization of articulate speech to angina pectoris. The present paper will trace briefly his contributions to the newly discovered asymmetry of articulate speech in the left frontal lobe (1866) and will in more detail trace and analyze his 1881 Croonian Lectures at the Royal College of Physicians on a medical shibboleth referred to as “congestion of the brain.” In a series of ingenious and rhetorically creative arguments with imaginative tropes, demonstrations, evolutionary accounts of cognition and blood metabolism for human/biped cognition, and cogent citations from the medical literature of the day, Moxon skillfully instructs his medical audience against the misleading notion of cerebral “congestion” as an underlying pathology for cognitive, motor, and sensory deficits seen in the clinic. In so doing, he provides the medical community with an in-depth glimpse at the circulatory system, its flow dynamics, and how they serve to meet the cognitive, motor, and sensory demands of upright bipedal man.  相似文献

The Urach 3 research borehole in south‐west (SW) Germany has been drilled through the sedimentary cover, and the gneisses of the Variscian crystalline basement at 1600 m below the surface (Black Forest basement) has been reached. An additional 2800 m has been drilled through the fractured crystalline rocks, and the borehole has been used for a number of hydraulic tests in the context of a ‘hot‐dry rock’ (HDR) project exploring for geothermal energy. The fracture system of the basement is saturated with a NaCl brine with about 70 g L?1 dissolved solids. Water table measurements in the borehole cover a period of 13 years of observation, during which the water table continuously dropped and did not reach a steady‐state level. This unique set of data shows that the hydraulic potential decreases with depth, causing a continuous flow of fluid to the deeper parts of the upper continental crust. The potential decrease and the associated downward migration of fluid is an evidence for the progress of water (H2O)‐consuming reactions in the crystalline rocks. Computed stability relations among relevant phases at the pressure temperature (PT) conditions in the fracture system and documented fossil fracture coatings in granites and gneisses suggest that the prime candidate for the H2O‐consuming reaction is the zeolitization of feldspar. The potential of the gneisses to chemically bind H2O matches the estimated amount of migrating H2O.  相似文献

The pilot hole (VB) of the German Continental Deep Drilling Program (KTB) was drilled to a depth of 4000 m, where large amounts of free fluids were met. The KTB‐VB 4000 m fluid can be related to either Mesozoic seawater or formation water from Permo‐Carboniferous sedimentary rocks of the Weiden embayment. During the Upper Cretaceous uplift of the Bohemian Massif both fluids could have passed organic‐rich Triassic to Carboniferous formations of the Weiden embayment before invading the uplifted and fractured basement rocks of Devonian amphibolites and metagabbros, where the chemical composition of the fluids was changed by albitization, adularization, and chloritization. Results of chemical mass balances for both sources are presented. In order to concentrate the formation water from the Weiden embayment significant amphibolitization has to be assumed. During a 1‐year pumping test the chemical composition of the 4000 m fluids remained constant. The accuracy of chemical analyses is critically reviewed. An improved preconcentration method of rare earth elements and yttrium in high‐Ca‐bearing saline fluids is described.  相似文献

Sand injectites and related features that are interpreted to have formed by large‐scale, often sudden, fluid escape in the shallow (typically <500 m) crust are readily imaged on modern seismic data. Many of the features have geometrical similarity to igneous dykes and sills and cross‐cut the depositional stratigraphy. Sand injectites may be multiphase and form connected, high‐permeability networks that transect kilometre‐scale intervals of otherwise fine‐grained, low‐permeability strata. North Sea examples often form significant hydrocarbon reservoirs and typically contain degraded, low‐gravity crude oil. Fluid inclusion and stable isotope data from cements in sand injectites record a mixing of aqueous fluids of deep and shallow origin.  相似文献

The currently active fluid regime within the outboard region of the Southern Alps, New Zealand was investigated using a combination of field observations, carbon‐ and oxygen‐stable isotopes from fault‐hosted calcites and interpretation of magnetotelluric (MT) data. Active faulting in the region is dominated by NE striking and N striking, oppositely dipping thrust fault pairs. Stable isotopic analyses of calcites hosted within these fault zones range from 10 to 25‰δ18O and from ?33 to 0‰δ13C. These values reflect mixing of three parent fluids: meteoric water, carbon‐exchanged groundwater and minor deeper rock‐exchanged fluids, at temperatures of 10–90°C in the upper 3–4 km of the crust. A broad, ‘U‐shaped’ zone of high electrical conductivity (maximum depth c. 28 km) underlies the central Southern Alps. In the ductile region of the crust, the high‐conductivity zone is subhorizontal. Near‐vertical zones of high conductivity extend upward to the surface on both sides of the conductive zone. On the outboard side of the orogen, the conductive zone reaches the surface coincident with the trace of the active Forest Creek Faults. Near‐surface flow is shown to dominate the outboard region. Topographically driven meteoric water interacts, on a kilometre scale, with either carbon‐exchanged groundwater or directly with organic material within Pliocene gravels, resulting in a distinctive low 13C signal within fault‐hosted calcites of the outboard region. The high‐strain zone in the lower crust focuses the migration of deeply sourced fluids upward to the base of the brittle–ductile transition. Interconnected fluid is imaged as a narrow vertical zone of high conductivity in the upper crust, implying continuous permeability and possibly buoyancy‐driven flow of deeply sourced fluids to higher levels of the crust where they are detected by the isotopic analysis of the fault‐hosted calcites.  相似文献
