Summary

This paper notes and explores the attraction of Dugald Stewart's moral philosophy for women readers and a few women writers. Student lecture notes reveal the chronological development of his ideas, as he drew upon the works of Thomas Reid, Adam Smith, and Adam Ferguson, and responded to political events. Particular attention is paid to Stewart's comments relating to women and gender, through discussions of education, the institution of marriage, and population questions. After 1800, he shifted away from a speculative conjectural history towards a philosophy of moral progress rooted in common sense philosophy and a belief in perfectibility. He taught a system of practical morality relevant to the education of children and strongly emphasised the importance of the association of ideas in childhood. For women readers, the message was contradictory in that he united an apparently conservative reinforcement of the relations of the sexes with a belief in the improvement of the condition of women through education in a modern, progressive, and commercial society.  相似文献

地方感指人与地方的情感关联,是地理学特别是人文主义地理学的关键概念。快速城镇化使得“地方”剧变,地方感也变得复杂多样,多元主体的地方感形成机制值得探讨。本文基于人文主义地理学视角,选取江苏省如皋市东大街为典型案例,通过实地调研,运用半结构化访谈等方法,将不同主体的地方感归纳为三类:根植型、创造型和关怀型。老年原住民形成了根植型地方感,其重点在血缘联结、归属感、身份认同;沿街商户生成了创造型地方感,主要涉及美学、经验与私人空间等;虽从地方抽离但仍与地方保持着积极情感纽带的“乡邻”们则形成了关怀型地方感,主要涉及关注、社会互动、熟悉等。借助案例剖析和质性研究方法,本文对地方感多元类型和形成机制的深入探讨将有助于理解地方感的多态性和分异性。  相似文献

A shifting American cultural geography, stemming from clustering of like-minded people, has been much-discussed in recent years. The “voluntary region”, proposed by Wilbur Zelinsky in his path-breaking The cultural geography of the United States, is a regional construct relatively unexplored by cultural geographers that may help in their contributions to such conversations. As described by Zelinsky, voluntary regions are places that attract individual, like-minded people away from long-standing “traditional regions” based on a desire for amenity and economic opportunity. I review the concept and its sparse embrace in the literature and suggest that it has much to offer our discipline. Using Las Vegas as a paradigmatic example, I explore methods that can be used to explore the formation and character of voluntary regions. I argue that the voluntary region framework is an encompassing lens through which cultural geographers can examine the complex nature of place and regional construction at the hands of dynamic forces that lead people to resettle in new places.  相似文献

The Anthropocene is deployed as incontrovertible fact, yet its foundations merit strong critique to challenge how particular voices and locations are absented, silenced, or enrolled in the fallacies that attend this epochal framework. Other placed, grounded, and scale-sensitive explanations exist for present and future state scenarios, including on islands—often the focus of apocalyptic thinking. Dealing with historical and contemporary struggles to decolonise is more powerful than engaging with a reified framework that is part of ongoing colonial-imperial excesses, uneven development, and racial capitalism. This work considers how four of us, as instigating authors, worked with five others, as collaborating authors, to understand academic works, activism, and artistic expressions of island life and concerns. Our aim was to learn about how and why their efforts to prioritise decolonisation is at the heart of what is needed to shore up island peoples’ futures.  相似文献

Abstract

The paper analyses a group of photographs of the old city of Porto, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The photograph is used as a medium to elicit the ways different social agents experience and relate to Old Porto as a heritage place. The photographs were collected as part of a wider research project on the way sense of place of Porto’s old city was differentially constructed by local inhabitants, tourists and the City Council. Illustrated postcards were also analysed. The findings demonstrate the usefulness of this particular form of image-based ethnographic research in understanding the forms in relation to a heritage lived-in place.  相似文献

是否有权利意识,是现代公民与传统臣民的重要区别之一。近代国人权利意识的觉醒,与西学的传播息息相关。其演变发展过程可分为五个时期:权利意识觉醒时期、参与意识觉醒时期、伦理人权时期、法治人权时期,以及权利理论的深入探讨期。总体而言,国人对公民权利的认识,无论是具体内容或理论,一步步趋于深入,但也存在着一些明显的不足,其中之一便是对私有财产权没有进行深入探讨。  相似文献

作为一种新兴的文化势力,大众文化迅速蔓延,渗透了人们的生活,它已构成了影响当代审美教育的一个基本时代特征。审美教育既处于大众文化的影响之下,同时又肩负矫正大众文化诸多弊病的责任。这无疑构成了审美教育的生存悖论,同时也对其本身提出了新的要求。在大众文化的新语境中,审美教育不仅要坚持其传统的诉求,即培养人们的美感和审美感受力、理解力、鉴赏力,提高审美趣味和艺术修养,更重要的是,它也是改造个人生活和社会的一条重要途径。美育要用另一种形式来重新构建世界,训练人们对美的热受和创造美的事物的能力,使人们更好地体悟世界的潜在意味,更有价值地生活。在此基础上提升人的道德意识,继而推动整个社会走向和谐。因此,审美教育不是当代文化教育中一个可有可无的点缀,它同时肩负培养新型人才、重塑人文精神以及推动社会进步的多重任务。在此情况下,研究大众文化的冲击下审美教育所面临的困境和应对这种困境的新战略,是十分必要和有意义的。  相似文献
